Custom Boat Flooring Questions
What types of custom boat flooring do you offer?
We offer premium custom marine flooring options, including GatorStep closed-cell EVA foam and Compass woven vinyl flooring. Each has its own look, feel and benefits. We'll be happy to compare the options and help you choose what works best for your boat, installation area, maintenance preferences and budget.
What is GatorStep?
GatorStep is a closed-cell EVA foam marine flooring system that is digitally designed and CNC cut for a precise fit. It provides a cushioned, slip-resistant surface and can be customized with layered colors, patterns, borders, logos and other design details.
What is Compass flooring?
Compass is a woven PVC marine flooring that combines the softer feel of carpet with the durability and easier care of a hard surface. Depending on the application, it can be made as removable snap-in flooring or installed as a permanent glue-down surface.
What is the difference between GatorStep and Compass flooring?
GatorStep is cushioned EVA foam with a sporty, highly customized appearance and permanent adhesive installation. Compass has a woven, yacht-style texture and may be removable or glued down. GatorStep is often chosen for comfort, traction and custom graphics, while Compass is popular for large deck areas and carpet replacement.
Is GatorStep better than marine carpet?
For many boat owners, yes. GatorStep does not absorb water, is easy to clean, provides cushioning and traction, and creates a modern custom look. Carpet may still appeal to owners who prefer its traditional texture or want a removable system. Tell us how you use and store your boat, and we'll help you compare the options without any pressure.
Can you replace the carpet in my boat or houseboat?
Yes! Replacing old carpet is one of the most noticeable ways to refresh a boat or houseboat. We can evaluate the area and recommend GatorStep, Compass or another suitable marine flooring option. Existing carpet, adhesive, snaps, deck condition and drainage will help determine the best preparation and installation plan.
Can GatorStep be installed over existing flooring?
GatorStep normally needs a clean, smooth, stable and properly prepared surface. However, we do have certain options that may allow installation over existing carpet. Send us photos or let us inspect the area, and we'll explain which options may work for your boat and what preparation is needed.
Does old flooring or adhesive need to be removed?
Usually, old carpet, loose flooring and adhesive residue must be removed so the new material can bond correctly and lie smoothly. The amount of preparation depends on the existing material and the condition of the deck beneath it.
Is GatorStep slippery when wet?
GatorStep is designed with a textured, slip-resistant marine surface that provides good traction in wet conditions. No boat surface is completely slip-proof, so normal care is still necessary around water, sunscreen, oils and cleaning products.
Does EVA foam get hot in the sun?
All exposed surfaces can become warm in direct sunlight, and darker colors usually absorb more heat than lighter ones. We'll help you choose a color combination that looks great while also considering barefoot comfort and how you typically use your boat.
Is GatorStep waterproof?
GatorStep is made from closed-cell EVA foam, so it does not absorb water like carpet. Proper surface preparation, installation and care are still important because water can reach seams, edges, hardware openings or the underlying boat surface.
Is marine flooring resistant to mold, mildew and UV exposure?
GatorStep and Compass are designed for marine environments and perform much better around moisture than traditional carpet. They resist water retention, mold and mildew and are made for outdoor exposure, but routine cleaning, drainage and proper storage will extend their life.
How long does custom boat flooring last?
Service life depends on sun exposure, foot traffic, storage, cleaning products, maintenance and installation conditions. Quality marine flooring can provide years of use when properly installed and cared for.
How do I clean GatorStep?
Rinse away loose dirt, then use fresh water, a mild boat-safe cleaner and a soft or medium-bristle brush as needed. Clean spills promptly and rinse thoroughly. We will provide you with cleaning instructions as well.
Can I pressure-wash marine flooring?
High pressure used too close to the surface can damage foam, edges or adhesive bonds. A normal hose and gentle brushing are safer for routine cleaning. Do not pressure wash the marine flooring.
Can a damaged panel be replaced?
Sometimes! Replacement depends on whether the original design file and material colors are still available, how the panels connect and whether the surface underneath is sound. Because flooring can change color slightly with age and sun exposure, a new panel may not perfectly match the surrounding material. Send us photos and project information, and we'll gladly review the damage and recommend the best option.
Can I choose custom colors and patterns?
Yes! GatorStep is available in multiple colors and can be designed with borders, faux teak lines, geometric patterns and other routed details. Available combinations depend on current manufacturer materials and the design's production requirements.
Can you add a boat name or logo?
Yes! Many projects can include a boat name, registration number, brand mark or custom graphic. Artwork must be suitable for production, and protected logos may require authorization from the owner of the mark. Additional design fees may apply depending on custom design time.
Can the flooring match my upholstery or gelcoat?
We can coordinate flooring colors with your boat's upholstery, canvas, graphics or exterior. Exact matches are not always possible across different materials, finishes and aging surfaces, so final selections should be made from current physical samples whenever possible.
Do you already have my boat's layout?
We maintain a growing library of layouts for many boats and products. Send us the exact year, manufacturer, model and areas you're interested in, and we'll be happy to check. Even boats with the same model name can have production changes or previous owner modifications, so we always make sure the fit is confirmed before manufacturing.
What if you do not have my layout?
We can create a custom layout by digitally scanning or templating the boat. The layout is then converted into a production-ready CAD design, reviewed for fit and customized before the flooring is cut.
How is a boat digitally scanned?
A trained technician captures the shape and location of the requested areas with precision measuring equipment. Our CAD team uses that data to create panel outlines, clearances, seams, borders and custom design details for CNC production.
Can you ship a DIY flooring kit?
Yes, some products with an existing layout may be available as DIY kits that can be shipped directly to you. Custom projects may require additional fit verification first. Send us the exact boat information and requested areas, and we'll help determine whether a DIY kit or professional installation is the better fit.
Do you offer professional installation?
Yes! Professional installation includes surface evaluation and preparation, panel positioning and careful adhesive application. Installation requirements and preparation charges depend on the boat and condition of the existing surface.
What is the difference between DIY and professional installation?
A DIY kit is installed by the customer, who is responsible for surface preparation, alignment and adhesion. Professional installation places those responsibilities with our installation team and includes the installation warranty stated in the project agreement.
Can flooring be installed on swim platforms and trailer steps?
Yes. GatorStep can be designed for swim platforms, cockpits, bows, helm areas, coolers, step boxes, trolling-motor areas, trailer steps and many other suitable surfaces.
How much does custom boat flooring cost?
Pricing depends on the total square footage, number and complexity of pieces, selected material and color layers, custom graphics, layout availability, surface preparation, travel and installation. Complete our Request an Estimate form, then text or email your photos to 606-425-5053 or info@wakecumberlandwatersports.com so we can learn more about your boat and prepare the most helpful estimate possible.
What flooring warranty is included?
The flooring options shown on our website include a five-year manufacturer warranty and a one-year installation warranty when custom installed by Wake Cumberland Watersports. Coverage is subject to the written warranty terms, exclusions, maintenance requirements and proof of purchase.
When is the best time to install flooring?
Fall and winter are excellent times to schedule upgrades before the spring rush, but projects can be completed throughout the year when temperature, weather, access and the production schedule allow.
